THE HISTORY OF THE CHESTERFIELD
There's no doubt about that the wellknown leather furniture pieces with buttons are regarded as timeless classics. But the history as to why Chesterfield became to be name for these elegant furniture pieces remains to this day a mystery. It's been said that Lord Phillip Stanhope (1694 – 1773), the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, which may hold the explanation, at the time was the first to order a "Chesterfield" sofa.
Stanhope was a highly appreciated politician and writer, but he was also regarded as a credible trendsetter. The story began with Stanhope visiting a local craftsman, where he ordered a furniture piece that would allow him to sit straight, in utter comfort, while at the same time preventing his clothing from wrinkling. His wish resulted in what we today associate with the classic Chesterfield model: the buttoned details; rolling and curved arms filled with horse hair; the nails running along the elegant edges and the even height on the back and arms.
The story goes that Stanhope lied on his dead bed in 1773, where he got a visit from his old friend. Stanhope would then have whispered his last word to his friend and the butler: "Give Mr. Dayrolles a chair". The butler interpreted this as literally giving Stanhopes godson Solomon Dayrolles one of his Chesterfield armchairs. After carrying the heavy armchair home, Dayrolles a took a good look on his new furniture piece and was fascinated by it's appearance. The years of wear had resulted in a majestic art piece that made it even more attractive.
After this period it's imagined that Dayrolles' acquaintances ordered similar furniture pieces as a natural reaction to grand fascination that was created after Stanhopes death. The leather sofa gained a more prestigious status year after year until it finally secured a spot at the Gentlemen’s Club of London. All colour schemes and models that for the last 200 years have been designed ultimately draw their inspiration to Stanhope's original design.
